Biographical Information - Speakers

George Luber, PhD

Dr. George Luber is an Epidemiologist and the Acting Associate Director for Global Climate Change for the National Center for Environm= ental Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His research interests include the epidemiology of harmful algal blooms and the health effects of climate chan= ge. Most recently, his work has focuse= d on the epidemiology and prevention of heat-related illness and death, the development of municipal heat response plans, and the application of remote sensing techniques to modeling vulnerability to heat stress in urban environments. In addition to his leadership role in the Global Climate Change Workgroup at CDC, Dr. Luber is a co-chair of the Human Contributions= and Responses/Decision Support Interagency Work Group for the US Climate Change Science Program.

Zack Mansdorf, = PhD, CIH, CSP

Zack is the Senior Vi= ce President for Safety, Health and Environment for L’Oreal North America and Worldwide. He has been at= the French based L’Oreal since 2000 and spent 5 years at the company headquarters in Paris returning to the L’Oreal technical center in Clark, New Jersey in 2005. Zack is a member of the senior management committee of L’Oreal and actively participates in their Sustainability efforts. He sp= lits his time between Clark, NJ and Paris where he has an apartment= . L’Oreal has approximately 65= ,000 employees worldwide and sales of approximately 17 Billion Euros. L’Oreal operates in more tha= n 120 countries worldwide. L’= Oreal USA has approximately 8,000 employees. Zack is a CIH, CSP and QEP. He att= ended several schools with Masters Degrees in both industrial and environmental h= ealth and safety, as well as a Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Kansas. Zack is well published and= has served as the President of AIHA and AIHF.&= nbsp; He also served on the Board of Certified Safety Professionals. Zack is a past recipient of the AI= HA Cummings Award.

Soroosh Sorooshian, PhD

Dr. Sorooshian is a Distinguished Professor, International Hydrology and Climate Change, UC Irv= ine, CA and is one of the eleven UC Irvine scientists contributing to the ground-breaking reports published in recent years by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which will share the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore.

Dr. Sorooshian receiv= ed his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, CA, his Masters in Systems Engineering from UCLA, and his Doctorate in Engineer= ing from UCLA. He has received numerous awards during his distinguished career, receiving NASA’s Distinguished Public Service Medal in 2005.

Don Lucas, PhD

Donald Lucas is curre= ntly the Deputy Director for the Environmental, Health, and Safety Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). He also performs research in = the Environmental Energy Technologies Division at LBNL and the School of Public Hea= lth at the University of California, Berkeley. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology a= nd a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from UC Berkeley. His current research involves= the production, detection, and health effects associated with combustion emissi= ons, especially from nanoscale particles. He was an author on the SB521 report to the Governor of California that recommended a ban on MTBE in gasoline. He w= orks with the California EPA and Air Resources Board as a scientific peer review= er and with their Multi-Media Working Group.

John Geesman, JD

John L. G= eesman was originally appointed as a Commissioner on the California Energy Commission in 2002 to fill an un-expired term, reappointe= d to a full five-year term by Governor Gray Davis on December 31, 2002, and ultimately confirmed by the Senate. He currently fills the Attorney position= on the five member Commission where 4 of the 5 memb= ers by law are required to have professional training in specific areas—engineering or physical science, environmental protection, economics and law. Commission= er Geesman serves as --Presiding Member of the Energy Commission’s Renewables Committee and the Facility Siting Committee; and Associate Membe= r on the Research, Development and Demonstration Committee, the Electricity Committee, and the Integrated Energy Policy Report Committee. Commissioner Geesman rejoined the Commission after originally serving as its Executive Director from 1979 to 1983. F= rom 1983 to 2002, he was an investment banker specializing in the debt markets. During this time, he served as Chairman of the California Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the California Power Exchange and as a member of the Board of Governors of the Independent Systems Operator. In November 2006, he was elected co-Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE), having served previously on their Advisory Board. Commissio= ner Geesman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ya= le University, and a Juris Doctorate degree from Boalt Hall, University of California, Berkeley.

Rick Zalesky

Richard E. (Rick) Zalesky is Vice President of the Biofuels and Hydrogen Business f= or Chevron Technology Ventures Company. In this role, he has respons= ibility for the commercialization of infrastructure development, production and sup= ply, as well as all current technology initiatives. A native of Los Angeles<= /st1:City>, California, he is a graduat= e of the Georgia Institute of Technology, with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Rick joined the company in 1978 as a design engineer at= the Richmond refinery. In his career, he has held a variety of management positions of increasing responsibility in the downstream in refining, marketing, and tec= hnology. Prior to his current role, Rick was general manager of the Richmond Refinery. Rick is Chevron’s primary coordinator for the FreedomCAR and Fuel Program of the Department of Energy (DOE) and a member of the UC Davis External Research Advisory Board.

Jas Singh, P= hD, CIH

Dr. Singh is a Senior Consultant with Golder Associates, a Global EHS consulting firm with over 6= ,000 employees in 26 countries. Jas is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). He = is currently the President-elect of the Academy of Industrial Hygiene (AIH). Jas has provided consulting services to industrial and institutional clients and go= vernmental agencies in the USA as= well as in Canada. For the past 10 years, Dr. Singh has focused on the South East Asian countr= ies providing Industrial Hygiene and Safety consulting services to multinational companies in the region. In 2005, Dr. Singh received the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s (AIHA) “Distinguished Service Award”= ; as well as the “Henry Smyth Award” by the Academy of Industrial Hygiene (AIH).

Susan Ripple, MS, CIH

Susan Ripple is the S= cience and Technical Manager in the Global Industrial Hygiene Expertise Center for The Dow Chemical Company in Midland, Michigan.   She holds an MS in Toxicolog= y from the University of Houston and a gradu= ate fellowship in Biomedicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Ripple has been a certified, pract= icing Industrial Hygienist for Dow for >20 years. Susan leads the technical advancem= ent activities of industrial hygiene at Dow, and her technical expertise is advocacy and policy science interfaces with EPA, OSHA and other regulatory agencies and legislators. She= also leads the setting of both internal and external OELs on Dow’s behalf. Ripple manages over 2= 00 internal Dow OELs, has served 13 years on the AIHA WEEL Committee (including Chair), and works with both California and Federal OSHA PEL update projects, serving as a member of the 2007-2010 California OSHA PEL Advisory Committee. She is also lead m= ember of the AIHA Control Banding group, the AIHA Emergency Response Planning Guideline Committee (Vice-Chair), authoring 15 ERPGs for publication in her 13-year tenure. Ripple curren= tly serves as the AIHA representative to the EPA’s AEGL Committee.

<= u>Dwight Culver, MD

Dr. Culver, a Diploma= te of the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Occupational & Environmental Medicine), attended both the University of Rochester School of Medicine &am= p; Dentistry (MS Occupational Medicine) and Stanford University School of Medi= cine (MD). His long and distinguished career included Medical Director roles within both the California State Health Departme= nt, Bureau of Adult Health and Aerojet General Corporation’s Azusa Facili= ty. From 1968-1972, he was President and Chairman, Systemed Corporation, with responsibility for Wright Patterson Air Force Base’s Toxic Hazards Research Unit, under contract with the USAF, Systems Command. He moved onto assuming the role of Co-Director, Cancer Surveillance Program, Division of Epidemiology, Department of Medicine, UC Irvine from 1988-2004; Director, Residency Training Program in Occupational Medicine, Department of Community and Environmental Medicine, College of Medicine at UC Irvine; and Clinical Professor, Occupational Medicine, College of Medicine, UC Irvine. He is presently Professor, Department of Epidemiology, College of Medicine, UC Irvine; member o= f both UC Irvine’s Compreh= ensive Cancer Center and ACGIH’s Chemical Substance TLV Committee; and a Medical Consultan= t to Rio Tinto’s US Borax Division. His awards are numerous, with some of = the most notable including the Rutherford T. Johnstone Award for Contributions = to Occupational Medicine in 2000 and ACGIH’s Herbert E. Stokinger Award = for significant contribution to the field of Industrial and Environmental Toxicology in 2005. He has numerous publications and presentations to his credit. He is also a recent appointee to Governor Schwarznegger’s Sta= te Scientific Guidance Panel.

<= u>Michael Wilson, PhD, MPH

Michael P. Wilson, Ph= D, MPH, is a research scientist at the Center for Occupational and Environmental He= alth (COEH) at the School of Public Health, Unive= rsity of California, Berkeley, where he conducts research and practice in chemicals policy, green chemistry, occupational safety and heal= th, and sustainable production (http://coeh.= berkeley.edu/people/apers_educ/wilson.htm). Dr. Wilson conducted his doctoral and masters work in environmental health sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1996 to 2003. He earned a bachelors degree in biology in 1984 fr= om the University of California, Santa Cruz. Dr. Wilson is the chief author of the = 2006 report to the California Legislature, Green Chemistry in California: A Framework for Leadership in Chemicals Policy and Innovation (http://coeh.berkeley.edu/greenchemistry/), which has drawn renewed attention to the problems of chemical and product management and the need for new policies that motivate and reward industry investment in green chemistry. In July 2007, Dr. Wilson was appointed to the California Green Chemistry Science Advisory Panel; in August, he was appoin= ted by California Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez to the state̵= 7;s Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program Scientific Guidance Panel.<= o:p>

<= u>Lindsay Booher, MS, CIH, CSP

Currently President-E= lect of the National American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), Lindsay started his career after graduating from John Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health with a Master’s Degree in Environmental Health Engineer= ing/Industrial Hygiene. He has held a number of roles over the past 20 years, including—Industrial Hygiene Officer, US Navy Environmental & Preventative Medicine Unit, Norfolk, VA; Industrial Hygiene Coordinator, Ex= xon Corporation; Safety & Health Manager, Exxon Corporation, Baton Rouge, LA Refinery; Industrial Hygiene Section Head, Exxon Biomedical Sciences, New Jersey; Section Head, Air Quality Control & Environmental Site Remediat= ion, Exxon Research & Engineering Company; and Manager, Global Occupational = Health Center of Excellence, Fairfax, VA. His professional service activities are many, including 7 years on the National AIHA Board. Lindsay is a National A= SIHA Fellow and former recipient of the National AIHA Kusnetz Award. =

<= u>Larry Gibbs, MEd, MPH, CIH<= span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt'>

Larry Gibbs is Chairm= an of the ACGIH^®, a professional membership association whose core purpose is to advance occupational and environmental health. In his day job, Larry is Associate Vice-Provost for Environmental Health and Safety at Stanford University, where he is responsibl= e for health, safety, and environmental risk management programs in addition to oversight of institutional emergency planning and risk communication. Larry= is also a lecturer in occupational safety and health at the Stanford Institute= for the Environment. Mr. Gibbs is= a certified industrial hygienist with over 25 years of experience in developi= ng, implementing and managing safety, health and environmental programs for academic, research and clinical institutions. In addition to his work at the university, he serves as a consultant for industrial, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and government organizations. He has authored over 25 publicatio= ns on health, safety and environmental management, and co-authored two books. In addition to his role on the ACG= IH Board, he is also on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Environmental Managers (NAEM), is active in the AIHA and the Campus Safety Health and Environmental Management Association.

<= u>John Mulhausen, PhD, CIH

Dr. Mulhausen is Director of Safety and Industrial Hygiene at 3M Company where he is responsible for leadership of = the Corporate Safety and Industrial Hygiene organizations and oversight of safe= ty and industrial hygiene programs worldwide. H= e is also co-author of "Comprehensive Exposure Assessment", chapter 6 = in The Occupational Environment - Its Evaluation, Control, and Management. David Down’s ba= ckground includes over 35 years of technical and managerial experience in the environmental health and safety field.&nbs= p; His experience spans EHS Management Consulting, whose focus is enhancing the creation, measureme= nt and communication of EHS value in client organizations. In this regard, he-- provides trai= ning and development services to corporate, business unit and site EHS staff in management tools and techniques; provides EHS program development services, including EHS Manual development, EHS audits, special emphasis programs, wo= rker and supervisor training; develops procedures and tools for ISO 14001 assess= ment and implementation; conducts ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001 system (Gap) Analyses; develops Safety and Environmental Management System Assessment (SEMSA) tool= s ; develops OSHA and EPA audit databases; and develops over 50 EHS training modules. At Rust E&I, he w= as responsible for the development of National EHS Management System services including product development and training, managing a diverse Environmental Department including Risk Assessment, Environmental Investigations, Site Characterization and Health/Safety personnel. At Control Data, he managed corporate environmental and industrial hygiene services; developed and implemented model respiratory programs, hazardous materials inventory database systems (including labeling), asbestos control programs, Community Right-to-Know programs, and exposure monitoring program= s; developed specifications and implemented a corporate occupational health database system. At IHE, he conducted industrial hygiene and air pollution studies in a wide variety of industrial settings, including electronics, semiconductor, fiberglass fabrication, foundries, smelters, metals refining, steel mills, battery pla= nts, printing, plastics compounding and fabrications, food processing, plating, paint mixing, medical device manufacturing, laboratories, and hospitals.= He received his Bachelors (Industrial S= afety) and Masters Degrees (Industrial Hygiene) from Texas A & M University. He is presently President of the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation.

<= u>Tom Grumbles, MS, CIH

Tom Grumbles has 31 y= ears of experience in the petrochemical industry. He is currently Manager of Product Safety and Occupational Health for Sasol North America = Inc., and Global Coordinator for Product Stewardship, Olefins and Surfactants Division. In North America, he manages corporate product safety and product stewardship activities, including transportation safety; occupational health, including toxicology and epidemiology; industrial hygiene; and occupational medicine programs. =

In the Global Coordin= ator role, he has organized the efforts of Sasol Germany, Sasol Italy and Sasol North America to implement product stewardship globally and, most recently, has taken the lead in the effort to manage the organization’s REACH compliance. Mr. Grumbles is currently the President Elect of the Internatio= nal Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) and Chair of the IOHA National Accreditation Recognition (NAR) Committee.= NAR is the Committee that manages the process of reviewing country accreditation/certification schemes for recognition against a set of International minimum program elements.&nb= sp; Grumbles has recently served as the elect= ed President of the National American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Previously, he served as Secretary of the association from 1996 to 1998. He= is a past winner of the AIHA Florence and Howard Kusnetz Outstanding Young Hygienist Award (1991). He served as a member of the Joint Association Ethi= cs Task Force that revised the Industrial Hygiene Code of Ethics; served as bo= th a member and chair of the AIHA Audit Committee; and chaired the Ad-hoc International Task Group that defined a specific path forward for AIHA in i= nternational affairs. He is currently Chai= r of an ad hoc group developing research and data to demonstrate the “value” of the occupational hygiene profession. Grumbles received his BachelorR= 17;s Degree in Biology in 1974 from Transylvania University, Lexington, Kentucky. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree in environmental health with a specialization in industrial hygiene and air pollution control from the University of Cincinnati, Kettering Laboratory, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1978. = He is certified in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

Frank Hearl, MS, PE

Frank Hearl is the As= sociate Director for Program Development and the Chief of Staff for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Mr. Hearl has been wi= th NIOSH for 34 years. He worked previously in the testing and certification program for air sampling instruments; was the lead industrial hygienist on studies of coal mine dust exposure, diesel emissions in coal mines, coal liquefaction plants, and various studies related to silica, silicosis, and = lung cancer. He led the NIOSH component of an international project on silicosis= and lung cancer with the National Cancer Institute and the Tongji Medical College in Wuhan, China. Mr. Hearl was also the= Team Leader for the National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Mixed Exposures Team, and is presently the Program Manager for NIOSH’s Construction Sector research program. He is a regular invited lecturer at George Washington University and Hood College. Mr. Hearl holds a Bachelors’ degree in Chemical Engineering from Purd= ue University (1974); and a Masters degree from M.I.T. (1980); and is licensed Professional Engineer in Maryland and West Virginia.

Aaron Trippler

Aaron Trippler is Dir= ector of Government Affairs for the National American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Mr. Trippler directs government affairs for more than 70 local sections and is chief liaison with Congress and the federal agencies. He has served in this capacity since 199= 2, when he developed the AIHA government affairs program. In directing federal affairs, Aaron is responsible for following all federal legislation and regulations, as well as drafting AIHA Congressional testimony and working w= ith numerous federal agencies on the public policy issues of AIHA. Aaron also directs st= ate government affairs for AIHA, annually reviewing nearly 3,500 pieces of state legislation and regulations affecting the profession of industrial hygiene = and testifying when needed. Aaron has 30 years experience in federal and state government affairs; and has developed government affairs programs for three national associations. He hol= ds a BS degree in Business Administration.

Steve Minter

Stephen G. Minter bec= ame Publisher and Editorial Director of OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS Magazine in October 2005. Occupational Hazards provides 72,000 reade= rs each month with news, articles and product information to help them manage = EHS functions in their organizations. He was named Editor in March 1989 and add= ed the responsibilities of Associate Publisher in January 2000. He was instrumental in the design and editorial direction of the Occupational Haza= rds Web site, which went online in 1999. He is responsible for the creation of Occupational Hazards' family of specialized electronic newsletters, includi= ng EHS TODAY, IH INSIGHTS and ERGONOMICS NEWS. He also led efforts to develop = the Champions of Safety and America’s Safest Companies recognition programs and the annual National Safety Survey= . In 2002, he helped to create RESPON= DER SAFETY, a Website and e-newsletter devoted to the safety of emergency respo= nse personnel. He joined Penton Media Inc in 1975 and came to the magazine in January 1977 as an assistant editor. He became managing editor of the magaz= ine in March 1983. A graduate of Oberlin College, he is an award-winning author of more than 300 articles on occupational safety and health topics. Chris Laszcz-Davis, MS, CIH, REA

Chris Laszcz-Davis ha= s over 34 years of increasingly responsible executive management, professional, technical and consulting experience in environmental affairs, occupational health and safety, operational integrity, risk management and product stewardship in industry, government and consulting. Chris’s extensive background encompasses several industries, including –nuclear, energy, biomedical research, chemicals, refractories and aluminum in its full cycle= of mining, smelting, manufacturing and distribution. An undergraduate double m= ajor (Biology/Chemistry), she went on to receive her graduate degree in Environmental Health Engineering from the University of Minne= sota. Following graduation in the early 1970s, she became the US Atomic Energy Commission’s 1^st environmental health/industrial hygiene management intern stationed in Washington = DC, with rotations through Lawrence Livermore Natio= nal Laboratories, Nevada Test Site, Oakridge, Los Alamos= and other GOCO operations. She went on to assume positions in several organizations--U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Oakland, CA, as Regional Manager, Medical & Environmental Health Programs; University of Califor= nia, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, Livermore, CA, Field Industrial Hygiene Engineer; 24 years with Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation = in a variety of operational, product and executive roles, both domestic and international, eventually retiring as their Corporate Vice President, Environmental Affairs, Health, Safety, Operational Integrity & Product Stewardship; and five years ago, The Environmental Quality Organization, LLC which provides a wide variety of EH&S management consulting skills and = solutions for small, medium and large organizations. Presently an Examiner, Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, Chris is also a former President of the AIHA-Northern California Section (NCS) and current President-Elect, Yuma Pacific Local Section. Hamid Arabzadeh, MS, REA, CSP, CIH, CHMM=

Hamid Arabzadeh is the principal of HRA Environmental Consultants Inc and an Envi= ronmental Health and Safety Manager at the University of California, Irvine. He is a lecturer at the University of Califo= rnia, Irvine Schools of Medicine and Engineerin= g and has taught at UCLA. He teaches courses in Advanced Environmental Health, Pollution Prevention Engineering, Hazardous Materials Management and Environmental and Occupational Health. Formerly, he was the Corporate Man= ager, Industrial Hygiene at UNOCAL Corporation.&= nbsp; He is a Certified Emergency Response Incident Commander, Operations = Chief, and Safety Officer. He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist, a Certified Saf= ety Professional, a master level Certified Hazardous Materials Manager and a Registered Environmental Assessor with California EPA. Hamid did his undergraduate work at McGill University, Montreal C= anada followed by his graduate degree from McGill University’s, School of Occupatio= nal and Environmental Health, in Science-Occupational Health and Safety.
